What to Wear for a Massage — What It Actually Means.

The question of what to wear for a massage is one of the most common first-timer questions — and one of the simplest to answer. Most people undress to their level of comfort, keeping underwear on if preferred. Professional draping (sheets and towels) is maintained throughout the entire session: only the specific area being actively treated is uncovered at any one time. Your entire body is covered at all other times.

"Professional massage involves professional draping. You are covered at all times except the specific area being actively treated. Your comfort is the only consideration."

For specific treatment areas — the lower back, glutes, and hip flexors — undressing fully (or to underwear) allows more effective treatment. For clients who prefer to remain more covered, your therapist can adapt technique to work through draping in most areas. Communication is always welcomed and never awkward — your therapist's only goal is your comfort and your therapeutic outcome.

Underwear On — Completely Standard

Keeping underwear on is the most common choice for first-time clients. It is clinically standard and does not meaningfully limit most massage treatments.

Undressed — Also Standard

Undressing fully allows unobstructed access to all treatment areas and is common in clinical practice. Professional draping ensures modesty is maintained throughout.

Comfortable Clothing — For Some Treatments

For techniques performed over clothing — compression, certain stretching, or chair massage — loose, comfortable clothing is appropriate. Your RMT will advise if this applies.

Specialty Considerations

For pregnancy massage, certain bolstering and positioning adjustments apply. For lower extremity or gluteal work, your therapist will explain positioning and draping clearly before beginning.

What Else Should You Know Before Your First Session?

First-time massage clients often have several related questions about session etiquette, communication, and what to expect. The consistent answer is: your therapist leads the process, explains each step, and adapts entirely to your comfort. There are no expectations placed on you beyond being present for your session.

Underwear On Vs Undressed — The Real Differences.

Both choices are professional, both are common, and neither is clinically superior for most treatments. Here is what actually changes between them.

"Registered massage therapists are trained professionals. There is no uncomfortable version of this conversation — they have had it hundreds of times."

What is the same:The professional standard of care. The draping protocol. Your therapist's conduct and approach. The session quality. Regardless of your undressing preference, every element of the professional experience remains constant.

What is different:Access to specific treatment areas. For gluteal treatment — one of the most therapeutically important areas for lower back pain, hip tightness, and sciatic conditions — underwear can limit direct tissue access. Your therapist will always work within your preference, but may note that a specific area could be more effectively addressed with full draping access. The decision is always yours.

One limitation:There is no limit — only a preference. Communication with your therapist before and during the session eliminates any ambiguity. If you have a preference, a boundary, or a question, stating it directly will be met with professional acknowledgment and zero judgment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What if I am uncomfortable undressing for a massage?
This is entirely normal — particularly for first-time clients. You can keep as much clothing on as you are comfortable with. Your therapist will adapt their technique accordingly and will never make you feel pressured. If you are unsure, keeping underwear on and discussing specific treatment areas with your therapist before the session is always a perfectly valid approach.
How much space do I need for an in-home massage?
A clear area of approximately 2m × 2m (roughly 6.5ft × 6.5ft) is sufficient. This fits in most living rooms, bedrooms, and even studio apartments. Pushing a coffee table aside or moving a desk chair is typically all that's required. Our therapists are practiced at efficient, professional setup in all kinds of urban living spaces — including very compact ones.
Is it safe to have a therapist come to my home?
Every MassageHome therapist completes a criminal background check before their first session. They hold provincial RMT registration or recognized professional body membership, carry $2M professional liability insurance, and their name, photo, and credentials are shared with you before arrival. You can track their estimated arrival time. The session takes place entirely at your comfort level — you control the session throughout.
Will my therapist see me undressed?
No — your therapist steps away or turns away while you undress and position yourself on the table. Professional draping ensures that only the specific area being treated is ever uncovered. Your therapist follows strict professional standards around draping and client modesty at all times.
